Piper Plastics is the best source available for true expertise in working with medical and implantable grade materials, such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyphenylsulfone (PPSU), self-reinforced polyphenylene (SRP), and polyetherimide (PEI) that are FDA approved and certified to ISO 10993/USP Class VI.

Piper Plastics brings our industry leading high performance polymer engineering and processing capabilities to the medical device and equipment industries. From engineering and design assistance, to prototype fabrication, thru FDA approval, and into full production - we have the knowledge to produce exceptional plastic parts at our ISO 13485 certified facilities. Piper's proprietary molding, annealing and machining processes maximize component performance to achieve higher chemical resistance and increased stability after undergoing repeated autoclaving and sterilization cycles and reduce material costs.

Piper Plastics injection molds, machines, and assembles high performance polymers for medical equipment and medical devices for implantable and instrumentation components. Piper's engineers and technical personnel have a comprehensive understanding of high performance polymers along with unmatched experience in providing the most cost effective manufacturing methods for a wide range of medical device components.

SUCCESS STORY: Bone Screw

Bone Screw

A leading medical device OEM needed a thermoplastic composite material to replace titanium for a demanding implantable bone screw application. The OEM was unable to find a composite material that achieved the high flexural modulus and tensile strength requirements needed for this application. Testing of industry standard rod also revealed large mechanical property variations.

Design Requirements

Skeleton
  • 3,000,000 psi (21 GPa) flexural modulus
  • 30,000 psi (207 MPa) tensile strength
  • Mechanical property standard deviation < 3%
  • Porosity-free 0.51 in (13 mm) diameter cross section

Piper Delivered

Only Piper Plastics, using our advanced process technology, was able to produce high strength carbon fiber reinforced PEEK rod that met the customer's engineering specifications.
